Hastwell and Lightfoot is a partnership of two families who have been working together from the vineyard to the wine bottle since 1988.
A sense of partnership is also the philosophy in their wine making. Only here it is a partnership of wine and food. As they describe it – their wines are made for eating. Briefly put -you open a bottle, you smell the wine, you take a sip and next you are thinking “wow this will go well with…”
Their vineyard is where these great flavours begin. Located on the northern deep sand slopes of the beautiful McLaren Vale. It is not lush country but it is perfect for growing grapes with wonderful flavour profiles. Today they have planted, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Shiraz, Tempranillo, Barbera, Vermentino, Fiano, Garnacha and Montepulciano. Plus there is the olive oil varieties Manzanillo, Paragon and Nevadillo Blanco.
The Hastwell & Lightfoot label has 11 wines, all are made with hands-on dedication producing a few hundred cases of each variety a year. Winemaking is done using traditional methods like small open fermenters – giving complexity of flavours and gentle handling. In all it is a judicious balance of the old and new ways of winemaking to produce wines ready to excite your palate and have you think of food.
