2012 Rochford Heathcote Reserve Syrah

Varieties: 100% Shiraz Winemaker Tasting Notes: Deep purple red in colour. Pepper and spice, intense black fruits are underpinned by animal/game aromatics (spontaneous fermentation). Quite closed so decant for an hour if possible. Aged for fifteen months in a mix of puncheons (25% new), closing down the fruit for now. Medium bodied with persistent tannin, healthy acid line. Elegant and refined in style. Will cellar well for twenty years minimum. Viticulture Notes: The Heathcote Wine Region in Victoria, is renowned as one of the best Shiraz growing regions in Australia and lies just north of the Great Dividing Range in central Victoria about 90 minutes€™ drive north of Melbourne at an altitude of around 200 metres. In general Heathcote, while warmer and more continental than districts south of the Great Dividing Range, still enjoys some lower temperatures because of the prevailing cool, south to southeast winds. The famous ancient red Cambrian soils in this region are the oldest known in the country, originating over 550 million years ago and resulting soil is deep, red-coloured, mottled with lime and impart low vigour to the vines growing in it. These soil characteristics along with a robust interest in Shiraz from this region attracted Rochford Winemaker Marc Lunt to seek out a select parcel of grapes from Greenstone Vineyard ensuring they meet the pristine standards required to sit under the Rochford Wines label and produce this special release wine. Harvest: Hand-picked 4th March Vinification: Short cold soak, slow fermentation lasting 25 days Elevage: 15 months in French puncheons (30% new) Technical Data: Alcohol 13.5%
