Karrawatta Anna’s Sauvignon Blanc
Hand harvested and whole bunch pressed. Fermentation in old French barriques has added another dimension to this wine. Maturation on yeast lees and partial malo-lactic fermentation, has resulted in a
Passionfruit, cut grass, and snow pea, but toasty, smoky, spicy and textural too. Sauvignon Blanc grapes from two blocks in our Adelaide Hills vineyard were harvested by hand, sorted and then whole bunch pressed. Fermentation, malo-lactic fermentation, regular lees-stirring and an additional four months in old French oak barrels build the wine’s texture, complexity and softness. The 2015 vintage conditions helped to produce average yields with great acid balance and excellent flavour.

GREENHILLS RD, ADELAIDE HILLS
Established in 1996, my Karrawatta vineyard in Meadows is one of the highest altitude premium sites in the Adelaide Hills Wine Region. The yields and vine growth are in natural balance and vines produce consistent low quantities of super premium fruit, with delicate flavours that represent the terroir of the site. The soil is uniform across the vineyard where the top soil consists of a shallow shaley loam overlying a free draining loamy clay with fragments of shale and ironstone. The altitude of the site ranges from 450–490m where each variety has been planted to suit the sites topography to ensure super premium wine production. The Sauvignon Blanc is grown on south facing cooler slopes and Shiraz grown on the north facing warmer, less vigorous slopes. The Pinot Gris is planted at the highest point with row orientation east/west to ensure none of the fruit is exposed to the afternoon sun.
At a local South Australian pub, a coin was flipped and it landed on tails, meaning my great great great grandfather, Joseph Gilbert, lost the bet and had to change his property name from ‘Karrawatta’ to ‘Pewsey Vale’. Joseph Gilbert made his first wine in 1847. Since then, the Gilbert family has continued to produce wine grapes and I am excited to reignite Karrawatta.
We produce small batch, single vineyard wines from three diverse vineyards, one in the cool climate of the Adelaide Hills and the others in McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek. All vines are detail hand-pruned and the fruit selectively picked and whole bunch-pressed to nurture the wines from vineyard to glass.
