Description

A small parcel of fruit from old vines was hand-picked for our Cabernet in 2014, a dry warm vintage that saw our vines produce very low yields. Whole bunches were hand-picked, crushed and left on skins for 7 days. The wine was aged for 18 months in small Damy French oak barrels. Drink now as a young, assertive red wine, showing blackcurrant, cassis, plum, mint, cedary oak and velvety tannins or cellar for 10+ years. 2014 VINTAGE:  95 points James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2016 Best Cabernet Sauvignon Trophy: Langhorne Creek Wine Show 2015 94 points: Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front 2012 VINTAGE Gold: Wine Showcase Magazine 96 points: James Halliday, Wine Companion 2015 Gold: Langhorne Creek Wine Show 2014 My Karrawatta ‘Burnfoot’ Vineyard is located on premium dirt, just off the Angas River, in the Langhorne Creek Wine Region. The vines were planted in 1989 into soil that does not get flooded and hence our vines tend not to be over vigorous. The soil type is a free draining thick brown loamy sand over a red brown sandy clay loam, calcareous at depth. All vines are detail hand pruned with love. Vine growth is in perfect balance, inputs are minimal and the Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon from these old vines is arguably some of the most beautiful from the region. This fruit is highly sort after and very few site’s can produce fruit of this quality, where berries are small and bunches are open. Only a small volume of water is applied during the growing season and with terroir of this site.

At a local South Australian pub, a coin was flipped and it landed on tails, meaning my great great great grandfather, Joseph Gilbert, lost the bet and had to change his property name from ‘Karrawatta’ to ‘Pewsey Vale’. Joseph Gilbert made his first wine in 1847. Since then, the Gilbert family has continued to produce wine grapes and I am excited to reignite Karrawatta. We produce small batch, single vineyard wines from three diverse vineyards, one in the cool climate of the Adelaide Hills and the others in McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek. All vines are detail hand-pruned and the fruit selectively picked and whole bunch-pressed to nurture the wines from vineyard to glass.
