Vegan and Vegetarian Wines

Some awesome news for vegans and vegetarians! We have now added a section to WineCloud which allows you to search for the wines that are vegan and vegetarian friendly.

All wines in the new Specialty section called ‘Vegan Friendly’ are both vegan and vegetarian friendly. For simplicity sake, we have kept this section only contains wines that are vegan friendly and therefore makes them also suitable for vegetarians.

There are many other wines listed on WineCloud that do also fall into this category so we will be contacting the winemakers over the coming weeks to confirm which other wines can be added to this section. It will be great for vegans and vegetarians alike to know that they can now go to just one spot to order amazing vegan friendly wines online, knowing that no animal products have been used in the making of these wines.

Some information about Vegan Wines for those that are curious

The majority of people are unaware that wine, although made from grapes, may have been made using animal-derived products.

During the winemaking process, wine is filtered through substances called “fining agents”. The fining process is used to remove protein, yeast, cloudiness and other organic particles. Popular animal-derived fining agents that may be used in the production of wine include; blood and bone marrow (although this stopped being used around the world in 1997 when mad cow disease caused concerns), casein (milk protein), chitin (fibre from crustacean shells), egg albumen (derived from egg whites), fish oil, gelatin (protein from boiling animal parts), and isinglass (gelatin from fish bladder membranes).

There are however several common fining agents that are animal-friendly and used to make vegan wine. Carbon, bentonite clay, limestone, kaolin clay, plant casein, silica gel, and vegetable plaques are all suitable alternatives. These fining agents now starting to become more popular amongst winemakers who are becoming more nature friendly using sustainable and often organic practices.

So, are you vegan or vegetarian? Well tell your friends about WineCloud’s new Vegan friendly section, spread the love and keep checking back over the coming weeks to see more of the wines that have been added.

Cheers!
